Mean Green Embark On Conference USA Roadtrip

DENTON - Riding a five-game win-streak, the North Texas volleyball team embarks on a Conference USA roadtrip, beginning against UTEP at 7 p.m. Friday. The Mean Green wrap up the weekend against Florida Atlantic at noon Sunday.

North Texas is 9-7 all-time against the Miners with a six-match win streak since joining C-USA in 2013. The Mean Green are 9-4 against the Owls, and the schools have split their six meetings since 2013.

North Texas (17-2, 4-1 C-USA) is coming off a 4-0 homestand, including a straight-set victory over Oklahoma in front of a program-record 719 fans. The Mean Green followed with a four-set victory over UT San Antonio, then swept Louisiana Tech and UAB to extend their conference win-streak to four.

Over the last four matches, senior middle back Holly Milam led the team in kills (44), kills per set (3.38) and attack percentage (.513). The Burleson, Texas, native became the seventh player in school history to compile 1,000 career kills with 1,007, which ranks sixth all-time. Fellow senior Amanda Chamberlain recorded a team-best 19 blocks during the homestand to pass Carly Collins for seventh in school history in career blocks (319).

Nationally, North Texas ranks sixth in kills per set (14.71), ninth in assists per set (13.68), 10th in attack percentage (.300) and 21st in aces per set (1.63). Chamberlain boasts the second-highest attack percentage in the country at .474, and York ranks 13th in the nation in assists per set (11.46).

Match One: at UTEP (4-13, 1-3 C-USA)

The Miners have lost seven of their last eight matches, with their lone win coming against a 14-5 Rice squad. Sophomore outside hitter Macey Austin paces the team and ranks ninth in C-USA with 216 kills. Fellow sophomore Niki Cebak leads the team in digs (199) and aces (18). However, UTEP ranks in the bottom four of the conference in every team statistic except for opponent assists, opponent kills and opponent digs. 

Match Two: at FAU (11-6, 2-3 C-USA)

While the Owls sit in eighth place in C-USA with three losses, they forced three-time reigning conference champion Western Kentucky to five sets in one of those losses. In addition to leading the conference in assists per set (12.95), junior setter Ivone Martinez ranks second on the team in aces (15) and third in digs (135). FAU boasts a league-high 15.07 kills per set, led by a pair of 200+ kill performers in Sigourney Kame (251) and Abbi Reid (208).

The Mean Green conclude the roadtrip on Sunday, Oct. 22, against Charlotte at 1 p.m. North Texas will return home to face Rice on Friday, Oct. 27.
