Mean Green Soccer Receives Championship Rings
North Texas Wins 13th Conference Championship
DENTON -- The North Texas women's soccer team received its 2017 Conference USA Tournament championship rings this week.
The Mean Green earned the program's 13th conference championship and fifth in four years on Nov. 5 when they beat Charlotte 3-1 in penalty kicks in the C-USA championship game. North Texas, who finished 7-1-2 in conference play, rallied off three consecutive wins and outscored its three opponents 6-1 in the tournament to win the championship.
"It's always a great time of the year for all of us especially seeing the expressions from the younger players receiving their championship ring for the first time," said head coach John Hedlund. "It just never gets old and for our program to now have won five titles in the short amount of time we've been a member of C-USA is unprecedented."
Maybe the most exceptional note coming out of the Mean Green's championship season was the fact that its two seniors Cat Sebazco and Tori Phillips claimed a conference championship every year they were at UNT and set a standard for the seven freshmen who won their first championship.
Since moving to Conference USA in 2013, North Texas has posted the most wins (38) and has the best conference winning percentage (.810) of any school in C-USA during that time-span. The Mean Green haven't lost a home conference game since 2008.
