Mean Green Post Third-Best Round In School History
North Texas Shoots -3 In The Second Round Of Minnesota Invitational
WOODBURY, Minnesota - It was a tale of two rounds Monday for the North Texas women's golf team on day one of the Minnesota Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club. The Mean Green posted their third-lowest single round with their three-under-par second round performance. That sits behind the school record of five-under-par performance at the Johnie Imes Invite last fall and a four-under-par performance during the 2010-11 season, in round three of the WorldLink North Texas Classic. The Mean Green are in 12th place after two rounds of play from Woodbury.
Sophomore Elena Kim posted a collegiate-best in round two, shooting a 69. Her previous best round was a 71 at last season's Conference USA Championship, where she earned all-conference honors.
"I am very pleased with our comeback this afternoon," head coach Michael Akers said. "We struggled with the greens in the morning and the bent grass takes time to get used to. Elena played great and the others were on the verge of going low. We just need to keep grinding and know we belong in this type of competition."
North Texas had a difficult start in round one, digging itself a bit of a hole with a 15-over-par showing on the par 72 course, but rebounded with a round that helped write some more in the record books in the afternoon.
Kim bounced back from a five-over-par first round, where she shot a 77 by birdieing six times in round two, on one, back-to-back on three and four, 12 and 14. The sophomore parred 10 holes in her career-best round. She sits in a tie for 39th place at two-over. Her second-round 69 ties her for the third-lowest single round score in school history, tying junior teammate Sol Lee and Randi Gauthier's 2002-03 performance at the Lady Eagle Invite at Oakmont Country Club.
Lee is tied with Kim in 39th, also at two-over through two rounds, after her three-over 75 in round one and one-under 71 in her second round Monday afternoon. Lee eagled on 18, while birdieing twice more in the second round to climb back into 39th.
Sophomore Lauren Cox shot an even-par 72, one shot off her collegiate best, set last season at The Dickson. Cox birdied on three occasions, on four and then went back-to-back on 12 and 13. Junior Sabina Pena debuted for the Mean Green after transferring from TCU, and shot a pair of three-over 75's to put her at six-over on the day. Senior Nyca Khaw is also six-over for the tournament after day one.
The Mean Green are back in action for the final round on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. with a shotgun start. As was the case on Monday, fans can follow along with the final 18 holes on GolfStat.
