Freshmen Lead North Texas To 14-Point Comeback At FAU
Holmes, Terrell Combine For 29 Points, 18 Rebounds
Feb. 10, 2018
BOCA RATON, FL. -- The North Texas women's basketball team trailed by 14 points late in the first quarter but rallied all the way back to win by 14 Saturday night at Florida Atlantic, 65-51.
Holmes and Terrell both came off the bench Saturday and combined for 29 points and 18 rebounds. Both were a rebound shy of a double-double. As a whole, North Texas' bench outscored the Owls' 37-4. Holmes' 18 points and nine rebounds are highs for her in conference play.
"We picked it up defensively tremendously," said head coach Jalie Mitchell. "We talked about things in timeouts and were able to figure it out and really got back to playing our defense. I'm really proud of our team."
Holmes closed out the first quarter by scoring five straight points to give the Mean Green some life and cut the deficit to nine points.
In the second quarter, she showed her range by nailing two 3-pointers to inch the Mean Green even closer. She finished with four 3-pointers, which ties her season-high that she set in the season-opener. Holmes, who had been held under 10 points in her last seven games played, seemed to be back to her non-conference offensive self by running around to find open shots and attacking gaps against the FAU zone defense. Her 12 field goal attempts are the most she's had in her last seven games played as well.
Holmes' effort pulled the Mean Green back within three points at halftime.
"My team has given me a lot of confidence," Holmes said. "They tell me to keep shooting and have been really encouraging and it's helped a lot."
During the Mean Green's game changing third quarter run, Terrell scored nine of her 11 points and grabbed three rebounds. She was the Mean Green's go-to option in the post, where UNT dominated in the second-half.
After trailing by three points at the half, North Texas (13-10, 4-7 C-USA) led by eight headed into the fourth quarter where they continued the defensive dominance and built on the lead.
The Mean Green held FAU (10-11, 4-6 C-USA) to just two points through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and increased their lead to double-digits.
In the fourth quarter is where North Texas' leading scorer Terriell Bradley finished off the Owls. Bradley finished with a game-high 20 points, her 14th game this season with 20 or more points and her 11th straight game in double figures.
Bradley has led each of the Mean Green's last five games in scoring.
Bradley, who was just two days removed from scoring a career-high 32 points by making a conference record nine-straight 3-pointers, didn't get many good looks on Saturday but found success driving to the rim and at the free throw line. Bradley finished 1-for-3 from beyond the arc.
North Texas returns to the Super Pit on Thursday. They'll host Southern Miss at 5:00 p.m. It's the Mean Green's Play4Kay game.
