Consistency Puts UNT Within Striking Distance Of Tournament Win
Snyman Leads Way For Mean Green In Second Round
IRVING, Texas - The Mean Green golf team on Tuesday put itself in the thick of the championship hunt with one round remaining at the Spring Break Challenge at the TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas.
North Texas, the No. 56 team in the latest GolfStat.com collegiate poll, shot 3-under par over the final four holes to finish the day at 6-over par - good for the best round of the day - and 12-over par for the tournament. The Mean Green are alone in second place heading into Wednesday’s final round and are three strokes behind Conference USA foe Rice after their second straight round of 290, while many other schools shot worse on Tuesday than in Monday’s opening round.
“We had a nice finish today, and I hope that will give us a lot of momentum going into the final round tomorrow,” UNT coach Brad Stracke said.
UNT is now part of a six-team gaggle that has separated itself from the pack in the 16-team field, as the Mean Green are three shots back of first place and two up on Stephen F. Austin and Illinois State, who are tied for third place at 14-over.
The Mean Green were led on Tuesday by junior Ian Snyman, who finished the day 1-under par to put himself in a tie for third place at 1-under for the tournament - just one shot back of two golfers tied for first at 2-under. Junior Thomas Rosenmueller was 3-over par on Tuesday but is still in sixth place at 1-over for the tournament.
Freshman Viktor Forslund bounced back from a rough first day to shoot even-par on Tuesday - the second-best round of any North Texas golfer - and had two birdies over his final three holes.
