North Texas To Play In R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Dec. 16
Mean Green Return To New Orleans Bowl For First Time Since 2004
DENTON - North Texas has accepted an invitation to play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 16 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome against Sun Belt Conference co-champion Troy.
"We're honored and excited to be continuing our season in a bowl game," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "Our coaches and student-athletes have worked very hard and our fan support this season has been tremendous. I look forward to continuing the momentum of Mean Green football in New Orleans. We are grateful to Billy Ferrante and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl for the opportunity. Troy is a tremendous team and this matchup will be fun for fans of both teams."
The Mean Green continued to improve in year two of head coach Seth Littrell's tenure, posting a 9-4 record and capturing the Conference USA West division crown.
This will be the 10th bowl game in North Texas history and second straight after playing in the 2016 Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl. It will be the seventh bowl game for UNT in the last 17 years, which includes four straight New Orleans Bowl appearances from 2001-04.
"We are honored to be invited to play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl," head coach Seth Littrell said. "I have heard so many stories about how great the New Orleans Bowl experience was from our fans, staff and former players who were there from 2001-04. New Orleans is a great destination that is easy for our fans to travel to. I'm confident this experience will be memorable for everyone around the Mean Green football program."
North Texas set several offensive single-season program records in 2017, including scoring, total offense, total plays, passing yardage, passing touchdowns and first downs, and tied the record for field goals made. The Mean Green won the C-USA West division at 7-1 and won eight of their last 10 games. They became just the seventh team in school history to win nine games in a season and the first since 2013.
This marks the first time since 2003 and 2004 that North Texas will play in a bowl game in back-to-back seasons. In those years, North Texas concluded the four-year run in the New Orleans Bowl after winning four consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships.
North Texas and Troy have met 10 times, with the Trojans winning eight. The last meeting was in 2012, when Troy knocked off the Mean Green 14-7 in Denton. Troy finished the 2017 regular season with a 10-2 record, which included a win over No. 22 LSU on Sept. 30.
